5 - 160 GENERAL - THREAD INSERTS
This task covers:
a. Remove
b. Install
INITIAL SETUP:
Tools Required
Tool Kit, General Mechanic's, Automotive (GMTK)
Shop Set Contact Maintenance Truck HMMWV
Materials Required
Thread insert (As required)
Equipment Conditions
Access to assembly
NOTE
The following general procedure is applicable for changing damaged thread inserts.
a.
Remove
(1)
Using the extracting tool, apply the blade to the top of the threaded insert (View A-A).
(2)
Apply pressure in the direction of arrow 'B' and turn extracting tool counter-clockwise.
(3)
Extract the threaded insert and discard.
(4)
Clean out the tapped hole with a suitable sized bottoming tap.

Install
(1)
Using the inserting tool, withdraw the mandrel and place the new insert in the chamber, the
tang must be towards the nozzle.
(2)
Rotate the mandrel clockwise thru the insert until it engages with the tang.
(3)
Continue to rotate the mandrel clockwise until the thread insert is engaged and flush with
the face of the nozzle.
(4)
Place the inserting tool squarely over the tapped hole and continue to rotate the mandrel
clockwise until the threaded insert is transferred in to the tapped hole. Do not apply
pressure to the tool.
(5)
Remove the inserting tool.
(6)
Using the tang break off tool, place the tool inside the threaded insert against the tang at
face 'A'.
(7)
Holding the tool with the left hand strike the head of the tool 'C' and break off the tang.
