CHAPTER 3
INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIR AND OVERHAUL
Section I. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
These procedures do not require any equipment or special tools which are not authorized in the TOE or TA.
Section II. REPAIR
3-1.
General.
Repair of a special reusable shipping and storage container consists of replacing parts which do not pass inspection,
adding missing parts, cleaning and minimum refurbishing.
3-2.
Procedure.
Accomplish repair as follows:
a. Cleaning. Thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of container with water and detergent, or by steam cleaning.
Remove all dirt, sand, grease and other foreign material. Allow to air dry. Remove loose rust and paint from container
exterior with a wire brush and treat with corrosion removing compound conforming to MIL-C-10578, Type II. Compound
may also be used to remove rust and light surface corrosion in areas not readily accessible for removal (light surface
pits, corners, adjacent to weld beads, etc.). Apply compound as follows:
(1) Mix one part concentrated compound with three parts water.
(2) Apply mixture to corroded areas with a brush, rag or sponge.
(3) Allow compound to remain for a minimum of one-half minute before removing with a water dampened rag
followed with a dry rag. A gray-white coating should remain, providing a good surface for painting.
